7 Day Flying Safari - All Inclusive - Lake Victoria/Maasai Mara
Day 1 Rusinga Island Lodge, Lake Victoria
On arrival in Nairobi you will be met at Jomo Kenyatta Airport and take a private charter plane direct to Rusinga Island Lodge at Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh water lake. Rusinga Island Lodge has eight charming en suite thatched cottages, a stunning swimming pool, Jacuzzi as well as a health & beauty spa with a full time trained beautician/masseuse offering a range of luxurious treatments.
There is a large established organic garden producing all manner of herbs and vegetables to accompany the superb cuisine. Enjoy an intimate, relaxed atmosphere with a host of activities at the lodge and in the area. Relax, unwind and soak away the rigors of long-distance traveling.
Day 2 Rusinga Island Lodge
Birders will delight in being at Rusinga watching hammerkops on the sweeping lawns and the rare double-toothed barbet. Life at the Lodge revolves around the lake and the island's birds - from stately fish eagles to tiny iridescent sunbirds and arrow-fast kingfishers, to name but a few of the 369 species of local and migratory birds.
The nearby Bird Islands, a short boat ride from the lodge, are one of the most important breeding sites for water birds on Lake Victoria with birds nesting in large colonies above otters and monitor lizards around the rocks. Fishermen will be in their element fishing from specially outfitted boats or from the jetty for Tilapia and Nile Perch. The lake's warm waters are also ideal for active water sports.
Day 3 Rusinga Island Lodge
An early morning 20 minute boat trip to the mainland and then a short drive takes you to Ruma National Park. Ruma is 120 sq km and is the only place in Kenya to see the Roan antelope as well as the very rare and endangered blue swallow. Rothschild's giraffe and Jackson's hartebeest are also found at Ruma and the tiny Oribi antelope are prolific. After the game drive, a spectacular bush breakfast awaits you.
Some of the fish eagles have become habituated to being thrown fish from the boat and swoop down to claim an easy prey, just feet away from you and your camera lens. Visit the local fishing village in the afternoon or cycle around Rusinga Island on a mountain bike or go fishing for Nile perch and tilapia.
Try and find time to walk to the area where in 1947, Mary Leakey discovered the 18 million year old fossilised remains of prehistoric animals, fish, insects, reptiles, plants and most excitingly, an hominid skull of Proconsul Heseloni - the last common ancestor of great apes and man.
Day 4 Sala's Camp, Maasai Mara
A private charter flight whisks you from to the vast savannahs of the world famous Maasai Mara & Sala's Camp. This is part of the Serengeti ecosystem and is famous for its migratory herds of Wildebeest, large concentrations of predators, Elephants and diversity of large mammal species.
The camp has the good fortune to be located on the convergence of 2 rivers, and in the heart of the Mara. This secluded spot offers tranquility and tremendous views along the Sand River towards Tanzania and the Serengeti. From your tents you will be able to enjoy an abundance of birdlife and wildlife.
Day 5 Sala's Camp
Accommodation is in 7 en-suite tents, one being a large family/honeymoon tent comprising of a double room with central sitting area. Tents are either twin or double. The spacious luxury furnished tents have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and safari showers with plenty of hot & cold water. Electricity is solar powered (via invertors), giving all tents plenty of light.
Day 6 Sala's Camp
During the great wildebeest migration in the months of early July to end October, Sala's Camp is ideally located since many of the animals move back and forth from the Serengeti in search of lush grasslands in the Mara. The game viewing during this time is exceptional, with dramatic river crossings and attendant predators. The camp also lies adjacent to a designated Rhino conservation area.
Ballooning over the migration is also an exciting fun-filled activity in the Mara, offered as an optional extra from Sala's Camp; lift off is about 25 minutes drive away.
Day 7 Departure
The mornings scheduled SafariLink flight will take you back to Nairobi's Wilson Airport where a vehicle will meet you and transfer you to your Nairobi hotel or on to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your outward bound flight.
